Pre-insulated terminals for low voltage applications

Pre-insulated terminals for safe, easy electrical connections

Simplify wiring with colour-coded crimp terminals

Pre-insulated terminals are a trusted solution for electricians and engineers needing strong, long-lasting connections. Developed to deliver dependable connections for low voltage applications in automotive systems, rail networks, and switchboard manufacturing.

Our terminals are colour coded, this allows for quick conductor size identification and reduces the risk of wiring errors, available up to a conductor size 6mm2.

Product overview

HellermannTyton offers pre-insulated terminals and bootlace ferrules:

In a variety of sizes and colours based on the French standard. Pre-insulated Terminals are available in either 99.9% pure copper with a tin-coating with durable PVC insulation or Brass with Nylon insulation making then suitable for electrical installation and termination. HellermannTyton Copper terminals are rated up to 600 V AC/DC, making then suitable for low voltage applications, while brass provides increased mechanical strength and resistance to heat and vibration.

These terminals are widely used by switchboard builders, as well as in harsh environments such as automotive, rail infrastructure, mining, oil and gas application - where performance and reliability are essential. All products are packaged in resealable bags for easy identification, storage, and repeated use in both workshop and field environments.

Types of pre-insulated electrical terminals

Versatile wire terminal designs for every connection need

HellermannTyton offers a comprehensive portfolio of pre-insulated terminals for a wide range of industrial applications. These include ring terminals, spade/fork terminals, butt connectors, bootlace ferrules, and quick-connect terminals—providing versatile solutions for various wiring and connection needs.

Our insulated terminals come in three colour-coded sizes for easy identification:

Understanding terminal materials: copper and brass

Many applications demand specific material properties to ensure reliable performance under diverse environmental conditions. Key factors include conductivity, mechanical strength, insulation type, and temperature rating.

HellermannTyton terminals are primarily manufactured from 99.9% pure copper with a tin coating, delivering excellent conductivity and corrosion resistance. Brass variants are also available, offering greater mechanical strength where required. Both materials ensure secure, durable electrical connections.

Material Voltage rating (C) Red current (A) Blue current (A) Yellow current (A)
Copper 600 19 27 48
Brass 300 10 15 24

Double grip vs Single grip terminals

Double grip vs Single grip terminals

Selecting the correct terminal is essential for system reliability, especially in demanding environments. That’s why HellermannTyton offers both single and double grip pre-insulated terminals:

  • Single grip terminals are ideal for general-purpose wiring where connections are not subject to frequent movement or vibration.
  • Double grip terminals include an extra copper sleeve for added strain relief, improved mechanical strength, and greater vibration resistance. These are well-suited for harsh environments such as automotive, rail, and mining applications.

Using the right terminal helps protect equipment, enhance performance, and maintain safety. Choosing the wrong type can lead to poor conductivity, overheating or system failure, especially under extreme conditions.

Halogen-free bootlace terminals for safer installations

Maintains terminal strength in -30 °C and +105 °C environments

Bootlace terminals, also known as bootlace ferrules, are used to crimp finely stranded cables. They prevent the fine strands from breaking inside the screw terminal, ensuring secure, reliable connections in screw terminals, terminal blocks, and control panels.

Manufactured to support various applications, our range of bootlace terminals comes in a variety of sizes, colours (French standard) and complies with REACH and RoHS standards. Made from 99.9% pure copper with a tinned coating and Nylon sleeve, they are halogen-free and rated for operation between -30 °C and +105 °C. Bootlace terminals are ideal for industrial control systems, switchboards, automation wiring, and other precision electrical installations.

Types of bootlace terminals

Bootlace terminals

Bootlace terminal BL4, for a conductor size of 4mm2

Designed to terminate one flexible cable, these bootlace terminals provide a clean and secure connection. Ideal for general wiring applications across control panels, switchboards and automotive systems.

Additional Features:

  • To fit conductor sizes: 0.25mm2 – 120mm2
  • Available in various pin lengths

Twin bootlace terminals

Twin bootlace terminal BLT0.75, for a conductor size of 0.75mm2

Used to terminate two flexible cables within a single ferrule, twin bootlace terminals are ideal for parallel wiring or when two cables need to connect to the same terminal point. Commonly used to simplify wiring layouts in compact control systems.

Additional Features:

  • To fit conductor sizes: 0.50mm2 – 6mm2

Un-insulated bootlace terminals

un-insulated bootlace terminal BLU25, for a conductor size of 25mm2

Manufactured without a nylon sleeve, un-insulated terminals allow for a wider operating temperature range from -55 °C to +155 °C. They provide a compact solution for terminating finely stranded cables and are well-suited for use in space-constrained or harsh environments.

Additional Features:

  • To fit conductor sizes: 0.50mm2 – 120mm2
  • Made from tinned copper

Crimping tools for bootlace and pre-insulated terminals

Whether your application is in electrical installation, automotive wiring, or industrial panels, HellermannTyton’s range of ratchet-style crimping tools ensures secure and reliable connections every time. Designed for ease of use and consistent performance, these tools deliver uniform crimps for both bootlace ferrules and pre-insulated terminals.

The built-in ratchet mechanism guarantees the tool only releases once the correct pressure is applied, preventing under or over-crimping. This not only improves connection quality but also reduces the effort required, minimizing user fatigue during repetitive tasks.

Your advantages:

  • Ergonomically designed handles for comfortable, extended use
  • Adjustable tension settings to accommodate various cable sizes and terminal types
  • Consistent, reliable crimps that reduce the risk of loose or faulty connections
  • Durable construction built to withstand demanding industrial environments

For pre-insulated terminals: HYYT7 and HYYT1

Our product range includes specialised ratchet crimpers tailored for both single and double grip terminals, ensuring precise compression and a lasting connection. Both feature clear colour-coded marking for accurate terminal size allocation.

  • Terminal crimping tool (for single grip) HYYT1
  • Terminal crimping tool (for double grip) HYYT7

For bootlace terminals: HYAC series

Unlike pre-insulated terminals, bootlace terminals are crimped directly onto the tinned copper tube rather than the insulation. This method ensures a secure connection by compressing only the conductor strands, which helps maintain the cable’s electrical performance and prevents insulation damage.

  • Bootlace terminal crimping tool HYAC5 (for conductor size range of 0.5mm2 – 6mm2)
  • Bootlace terminal crimping tool HYAC6 (for conductor size range of 6mm2 – 16mm2
  • Bootlace terminal crimping tool HYAC10 (for conductor size range of 0.5mm2 – 16mm2

FAQ - Frequently asked questions

Can bootlace ferrules be used with solid and flexible cables?

Bootlace ferrules are specifically designed for use with flexible (finely stranded) cables, as they help maintain conductor integrity and ensure a secure connection. While not typically recommended for solid conductors, they can be used if necessary, though the benefits are limited compared to their use with flexible cables.

Are pre-insulated terminals reusable?

No. Pre-insulated terminals are designed for single use only. Once crimped, they form a permanent mechanical and electrical connection and should not be reused to ensure reliability and safety.
